I need to know about drug treatment for Hypothyroidism.?

Hi. My brother is a Down Syndrome child and has been found to have Hypothyroidism. He is 14 years old. The doctor has suggested thyroxin for his treatment, saying that she will be starting the trial with a very small dose. I would like to know (particularly from someone who has undergone this treatment) about any side effects and their implications. I would also like to know how long the therapy is carried out for and what are the visible advantages. Thanks.

Thyroxine is these days given as the synthetic hormone levothyroxine. If the dose is increased gradually to the correct therapeutic dose, there should be no side effects as basically the drug is merely physiological replacement of low hormone levels. Treatment is always lifelong.

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism 6 or so years ago. My metoblism was quite slow, my lower neck was thick, i suffered with depression and weight gain. I was placed on the lowest dosage of synthroid and truly never felt that it made much difference. I took the med for a year, got a new blood test and the dr renewed the same prescription. I would take the med for several months then stop since I didn’t feel any different. The blood tests showed no change each year.

This summer I told my dr–again–that it just didn’t seem to make any difference whether I took the med or not. This time, the blood test showed a significant change, the dr increased the dosage, and I will not go a day without it! My metabolism has improved dramatically–I’ve lost 15 pounds without intense effort, I have energy that I haven’t had in years–hardly ever take an afternoon nap now. My depression has improved and I plan to stop taking that med within the next few months.

When my dr first prescribed synthroid, he told me it would be for the rest of my life. Now that I am on the right dosage, I’ll be happy to continue it for the rest of my life.

Good luck to your brother. And to you.
