While Graves' disease is a slow progressing autoimmune disease causing hyperthyroidism, Hashimoto's is a more rapid autoimmune disorder that initially starts out as hyperthyroidism until it destroys enough of the thyroid and you begin getting signs of hypothyroidism. It is called a bimodal autoimmune disorder, since you get signs of both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism. There are other causes, like if your medications are too high, or not high enough. You can have multiple exposures to toxins that can cause shifts in thyroid hormones. Other medications or supplements that you take to be affecting either your hormone directly, or the absorption of medications at your currently taking for your thyroid disorder (calcium and iron block absorption of thyroid thyroid medication). It could be something completely non-thyroid related, such as bipolar disorder. It could be a neurotransmitter imbalance. There tons of "it could be's," so you in your doctor need to be able to troubleshoot.
